Question:

1. Can we recycle a rabies dog tag? It's all metal.

2. Also, since I found you, how do we recycle batteries? I have a number of C batteries! We were doing some heavy duty spring cleaning this weekend.

City of Elgin’s Answer:

A dog rabies tag is made of mixed metal and cannot be recycled. Please place in your trash collection bag.

Batteries can be recycled through the At You Door Service, at no additional cost.  Here is the information:

The materials accepted through this program include:*At Your Door 800-449-7587/Collection stops with toters. No opt out option. This is a city wide program.
Service is unlimited monthly by scheduled appointment with At Your Door.

To dispose of home-generated special materials and schedule a collection at your home, contact At Your Door in one of these two ways:

• Call 800-449-7587 - Available 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. CST M-F (Se habla espanol.)

They do not collect ammunition, explosives, asbestos, tires, or any materials in unlabeled or leaking containers.

Quantities may be limited and will be discussed when calling.
Hazardous materials must fit securely in the containment bag provided/mailed to the homeowner.

Automotive Products
Antifreeze, batteries, brake fluid, motor
oil and filters, fuels, and more.

Aerosol Cans Full or Empty
Lids are to remain on the aerosol cans and the lids are recycled after collection through At Your Door.

Garden Chemicals
Fertilizers, insect sprays, herbicides,
pesticides, and weed killers.

Paint Products
Paint, caulk, glue, stain, stripper, thinner,
and wood preservative.
Household Cleaners
Ammonia, heavy-duty cleaner, rust
remover, tile/shower cleaner, upholstery
cleaner, and more.

Electronics
Computers, monitors, keyboards,
MP3 players, televisions (limit one per
call)
, DVD/CD players, tape players,
VCR, cell phones, desktop printers, fax
machines, microwaves, and holiday lights.

Mercury containing items
Batteries, compact fluorescent lamps,
fluorescent tubes, thermometers, and
thermostats.

Sharps, needles, and lancets
Must be placed in a resident provided sealed, rigid, puncture resistant container.
The best containers would be a plastic soda bottle or a laundry detergent bottle.
