Box of Valentine’s Day Mixed Nuts

Preview

Question:

I just finished the Valentine's Day gift of mixed nuts from my husband. I'm wondering what to do with the packaging because nothing has a recycling code on it. I assume the inner plastic tray goes in the garbage bin if I can't ascertain if it is a 1, 2, 4, or 5 recycling code. Right? However, the box and lid are cardboard, which I know to be recyclable, but it has a slick/shinny finish. Can I recycle the box or not? And do I need to cut it up into pieces before putting it into my recycling bin?

City of Elgin’s Answer:

If you have items that are not clearly labeled and you are not sure of the material, it is recommended to throw it out (when in doubt, through it out), to avoid contamination. In the items presented, discard the plastic tray since the material type is unknown. The box can be recycled.
