Demand Outpaces Supply at New Elgin Charging Station

Good news for electric car owners visiting downtown Elgin. A new ChargePoint charging station has been installed in front of City Hall.

In the last 10 years, electric vehicles (EV) have become more popular as an alternative to gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles. 5.3 percent of new car sales in 2022 were electric, almost double sales in 2020. While it can take a couple of years of ownership to start reaping the economic and ecological benefits, most vehicles last between 10 and 12 years or 200,000-300,000 miles per Car and Driver. Plenty of time to reap the benefits of electric ownership. Over the life of an EV, you can expect to save 90,000 lbs of CO2 and $20,000 in fuel expenses. Other standard maintenance items like oil changes, brake replacements, and other engine oils may be reduced or eliminated.

Popularity increases demand for charging services. Elgin already has a few charging stations around the City, including options downtown at the Grand Victoria Casino and Elgin Public Parking Garage next to The Centre. Local Elgin resident, Diana Alfaro said, ”I’m excited to see more charging infrastructure in downtown. Tonight, I parked here to go to BeaUnique and Vern’s Tavern”

A recently opened Tesla-dedicated charging station across town in the Meijer parking lot has picked up popularity, but with 8 stations, it rarely sees a full lot. “I charge my vehicle at the paid station on Randall, as the speed of a Tesla charging station exceeds that of the others and is worth the cost.” said an Elgin resident who chose not to be identified.

Word traveled quickly, with local EV owners driving by to check out the new charger and familiarize themselves with the new location. A group quickly gathered, many getting out of their vehicles for an impromptu chat with other EV owners.
